Legacy of the Plains is a destination for people interested in stories of human and agricultural history in the North Platte Valley and High Plains. Through interactive exhibits, living history, educational programs, and archival resources, we invite visitors to explore, experience, and connect with the unique history of this region of the American West. We serve area residents who wish to preserve and learn about their heritage as well as researchers and tourists from around the country and world who seek historical resources, education, and entertainment.
Our museum exhibits focus on the archaeology of Native American and Westward Expansion sites, the lives of pioneering settlers, the establishment of irrigation, the development of rural communities, the diversity of culture in the High Plains, and the innovative technologies and cultural practices of raising animals and crops-including cattle, sheep, potatoes, sugar beets, beans, corn and wheat-in a semiarid environment.
"What a surprise! This museum is chock full of interesting and informative exhibits. The videos are well done, the depth of detail is amazing and overall it's an outstanding place to stop going to or from the Scottsbluff National Monument." - redrosesue, TripAdvisor

"We had a rainy day to fill and decided to drop by. Best decision of the stay in Nebraska! There is so much to see and lots of exhibits were hands on. Be sure to stop reading and look at the items on display (I kept forgetting) It's a fascinating look at the history of the panhandle area and what made it into the place it is today. Allow at least 90 minutes. Well worth every minute!!" - orracle, TripAdvisor

"I wasn't expecting much, but was ultimately blown away. The history of this region is rich and the Museum does not let you down. From the early travelers on the Oregon trail, to the rising of the region until today, this museum tells you all about it. They hand out ear buds to listen to audio recordings of the area, and also have in depth readings at the many stations throughout. The museum staff is also quite knowledgeable about the history and will answer any questions you may have. The views from the museum are also quite nice of Scott's Bluff. Definitely a must stop when traveling through." - Jon C., TripAdvisor

"I was on my way to Scottsbluff when I decided to pull in to the Legacy of the Plains Museum. The stop wasn't on my checklist before the day started but I was glad that I stopped in. Originally, I figured it would be a small museum that would help stretch the legs out after my drive but I spent a good amount of time there. An excellent museum to see how the people of the region lived and what they went through to make it work. A solid collection of old farm equipment that people would enjoy, especially farmers. The volunteers there were extremely friendly and helpful. If you only have time, or want to visit one museum while in the area to see how people lived, this one should be it." - jacob_riedle, TripAdvisor
